Edinburgh Academicals Rugby Club, the second oldest club in the UK, has confirmed that it will build a £8 million facility for 5,000 spectators (2,500 seated) in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, beginning in autumn 2014.
City councillors have approved the development. The club said the stadium will create nearly 100 full-time equivalent jobs. The next stages will be:
- Legal agreements will entered into with the Academical Club and with the Council.
- Internal layouts will be drawn in detail to allow the club to apply for building warrants.
- Once building warrants have been obtained, the club will go out to tender to appoint a contractor.
The stadium’s inner city location met with significant opposition and one local councillor called it a “shopping mall with a stadium attachment”. It will contain conference facilities and a rugby museum, backed by VisitScotland. The club’s ground at Raeburn Place staged the international match between Scotland and England in 1871.
