For the first time in its 16-and-a-half year existence, DW Stadium has hosted both its tenant clubs on one day. The football AND rugby clubs played on Easter Monday, 28 March within the space of eight-and-a-half hours. Latics hosted Rochdale and the Warriors entertained Hull KR. The DW Stadium staff embraced a concept only usually experienced by managers of indoor arenas.
The clash came after the RFL ignored Wigan Warriors’ request to not play at home on Easter Monday. After discussions between stadium management, Latics chairman David Sharpe and Wigan Warriors owner and chairman Ian Lenagan, the decision was made to go ahead and play both.
DW Stadium Manager Andy Birch told Wigan Today that he and his staff relished the challenge.
